Chasing Test Tubes

Okay. Teaching is the most absurd profession in the world. It is the only job I know of that you have to actually pre-work to get to your real work. It is the only job in which you have to herd cats into a military line before you can actually do what you are paid to do.

My husband is a scientist. When he works, he walks into the laboratory, takes out the equipment and begins his experiment or assay or whatever. He doesn't have to bark orders to the microscope to focus nor does he have to make the test tubes quit playing tag and sit in their seats. The chemicals he needs sit there silently until he needs them. He doesn't have to tell them to put their lipstick away or to quit brushing their hair.

I, on the other hand, have to line my equipment up but unfortunately,it is animated. It ranges in size from mountainous to little but mighty. It talks, walks, laughs, passes gas and complains. And this all happens as I get ready to do the job I have been hired to do, teach.
